About Gynaecologist
Gynecologists are doctors who are female health specialists, who focus on
the female reproductive system. They deal with many issues including maternity, or pregnancy and childbirth,
menstrual and reproductive issues, sexually transmitted infections, hormone
disorders and more.
Why is Gynecology important?
Gynecologists
encourage women to make their health a priority. Regular gynecological
examinations are an important part of women's health. This includes a pelvic
exam to assess the health of your reproductive organs, a Pap test to identify
abnormal cells in the cervix, and a breast exam.
At What Age Can Women See a Gynecologist?
Gynecologists can
treat a girl or woman at any age. Women can be visited by a gynecologist from
the age of 13 to 15 years.
Having a
relationship with a doctor makes a girl or woman more comfortable to ask questions
about menstruation, sexuality, etc., and provides a point of contact if
symptoms occur in the future.
This gives the doctor a chance to guide a woman's overall well-being over the long term through consultation on important health and lifestyle issues.
Qualifications
All gynecologists
certified in the US must first graduate from "accepted medical
school". This means that they are fully trained medical doctors with a
license to practice.
Fully qualified gynecologists have at least 8 years of
medical study and training. To become a gynecologist, a person must study 4
years in medical school, followed by a 4-year obstetrics-gynecology residency
program.
